SUR-251L - Intro to Operating Room Nursing Lab (1 credits)
Prerequisite(s): PREREQUISITES: Senior level nursing student or graduate nurse COREQUISITES: SUR250, SUR252C
In this course the student nurse or graduate nurse will have the opportunity to practice the principles of aseptic technique by dispensing sterile supplies and creating a sterile field as an unsterile member of the surgical team. The student or graduate nurse will also have the opportunity of performing the surgical scrub, donning sterile gown and gloves and creating a sterile field as a sterile member of the surgical team. The student or graduate nurse will learn basic instrumentation, prepare instruments and packages for sterilization, and removes sterilized items from an autoclave. They will also have experience in patient positioning with a focus on safety for positioning the unconscious patient. The perioperative process will also be incorporated, by means of simulated experiences, to reinforce preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative patient assessment. This process will be reinforced further through observation in the clinical setting. This course requires a per credit health career fee; check the tuition and fee schedule for the current rate.
