
July 30, 2002 (PITTSBURGH) – Allegheny County Council has approved the nomination of Philip L. Miller, Ph.D. to the Community College of Allegheny County Board of Trustees.
Miller, executive vice president of
iCarnegie, Inc. will fill the remaining term of Charles Blocksidge,
Ph.D., who resigned from the Board earlier this year.
During his 19-year career at Carnegie Mellon University, Miller built and directed the Introductory Programming Group, which annually taught computer science classes to about 1,000 students. His research projects produced the McGnome Programming Environments that were used at Stanford, Harvard, Texas, and many other leading universities.
Miller has been an international leader in computer science education throughout his academic career. He co-founded iCarnegie, chartered by Carnegie Mellon University to deliver a world-class education in software development through partnering institutions worldwide. Currently, iCarnegie is serving more than 5,000 students through its more than 20 partnerships, including those in several states, Australia, Chile, China, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Mexico, the Phillippines and Taiwan.
Miller began his career as an assistant professor of political science, statistics and computer science at West Virginia University. Prior to iCarnegie, he served as chief technical officer and chief operating officer of an Internet-based virtual university.
Miller was instrumental in the creation of the College Board’s Advanced Placement Computer Science Course. As a member of the Mathematical Sciences Review Committee, he shared oversight responsibilities for the SAT Math exam and the College Board’s other mathematical offerings.
