Ornamental Horticulture

SOUTH
Certificate (226.1)  
This program prepares the student for a position in the field of ornamental horticulture. Students will be able to select, maintain and use plants in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings. Upon completion of this program, graduates will be able to obtain entry-level positions at greenhouses, nurseries, garden centers or floral shops as designers, growers, retail sales personnel, and plant care specialists. Students will be prepared to take the core and category 22 exams for pesticide applicators.

Program Objectives:

  • Retrieve, analyze, organize, and evaluate information about horticulture through technological and traditional means while using accurate horticulture terminology.
  • Evaluate landscape, garden, and design situations and solve problems related to horticultural subjects.
  • Use and operate horticulture-related equipment and structures
  • Recognize and apply standard business practices of the industry, such as estimating and bidding, insurance, state regulations, and laws and regulations related to pesticide use and safety.
  • Describe the importance of plants to the environment and daily life while recognizing the global issues related to plants and their uses in culture and society.

Landscape and Turfgrass Management

SOUTH 
Certificate (228.1)  
This program prepares the student with the skills to enter the field of landscape horticulture. Students will be able to select, install and maintain ornamental plants in landscaped areas. Safe and correct use of landscape equipment as well as landscape construction techniques will be covered. Upon completion of the program, graduates will be able to obtain entry-level positions as landscape and turfgrass technicians, and as assistants to arborist and landscape installation specialists. Graduates will be prepared to take the core and categories 6 and 7 exams for pesticide applicators.

Landscape Design

This program prepares the student with the skills to enter the field of landscape design. Students will be able to prepare landscape drawings and select plants appropriate for the planting site. Upon completion of this program, graduates can obtain entry-level positions as landscape designers at garden centers, nurseries, or become self-employed.
