 Why Choose a Non-Traditional Career?

It is important for individuals to consider a career based on their own interests, abilities, and needs. A person’s gender should not be a determining factor in choosing a career path. If you choose a career field based solely on the idea that women and men are predisposed to being/doing a certain job, you are limiting your options.

Everyone has the right to work in a field that provides a sense of personal satisfaction, pays family-supportive wages, and matches that individual’s abilities and talents. The Community College of Allegheny County and the Perkins Grant encourage students to explore Non-Traditional career options.

There are advantages for both men and women to consider Non-Traditional Career choices.

Financial Benefits

Many typically male careers pay better wages. These careers can also offer better health and retirement benefits.

High Priority Jobs

These are occupations that are in demand by employers, have higher skill needs (require educational training after high school), and are most likely to provide family-sustaining wages.

Better Opportunities for Advancement

Some traditionally male occupations are often unionized and/or have established career ladders so that employees can work their way up to even higher salaries and better benefits

Gender Equity Hiring Practices

Individuals in Non-Traditional fields may have a greater chance of finding work in their occupation because there are so few people representing their gender.

Variety

There are a wide variety of careers available. Considering non-traditional careers will provide a greater variety of career opportunities.

Greater Job and Self Satisfaction

Individuals who choose careers based on their interests and abilities rather than on gender stereotypes experience greater job satisfaction. These people impact society and future generations by breaking down stereotypes as role models for their peers.
