GED Test Eligibility

Who Is Eligible To Take A GED Test in Pennsylvania?

You must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Be a Pennsylvania resident.
  • Not be enrolled in an approved or licensed secondary school.

Or, you must:

  • Be 16 or 17 years of age. (No one under the age of 16 may take the GED Test)
  • Be a Pennsylvania resident.
  • Provide an official letter of withdrawal from your school district, on school district letterhead, signed by a school official, and include date of withdrawal and the date you would have graduated if you had stayed in school.
  • And,provide one of the following:
    • Written request by an employer requiring a high school equivalency for job opportunities.
    • Written request by a college, technical trade school, or university which accepts applicants on the basis of GED test scores.
    • Written request by a recruiting official for persons who wish enlist in a branch of the Armed Forces for which high school equivalency is a prerequisite.
    • Written request of a director of a state institution for residents, patients, or inmates, no earlier than 90 days before anticipated release or discharge from the institution.
    • Copy of a court order indicating that you are required by the court to take the test.
