U.S. Postal Rate Increases Effective January 22, 2012
New postage rates based on shape, thickness and weight
Beginning January 22, 2012, the rate to mail a one ounce, first-class letter will increase to 45¢. Increases will be effective for each additional ounce for letters and flats over one ounce and increases across the board for parcels. The United States Postal Service changed to a shape-based pricing schedule in May, 2007. This means they have been placing a greater emphasis on the size and not the weight of the item being mailed when determining the cost. Therefore, all material being mailed should be folded and placed into the smallest size envelope/package possible.
