Sharon McGinnis Young owns and operates McGinnis Sisters Special Food Stores, three Pittsburgh based specialty grocery stores, along with her two sisters, Bonnie and Noreen. The stores feature high quality perishable goods along with imported groceries and regional specialty items. Having grown up in the business, she received hands-on training in all of the day-to-day operations of the grocery business from her parents, who started the business in 1945.
Young has been involved in the management of the company since 1975. Her primary responsibilities include development and implementation of the company’s marketing and public relation campaigns. She is also involved in structuring company goals, future store expansion plans, financing, equipment procurement, the review of financial statements, product development and holiday forecasting.
McGinnis Sisters has received numerous awards for excellence including Top Women in Grocery, Entrepreneur of the Year, Family Business of the Year, Carlow College Women of Spirit, finalist for the Athena Award as well as many local awards such as Best Grocery Store, Best Fish Sandwich, Pittsburgh’s Best Deli and The Place to Shop for Produce.
Young received her Associate of Arts degree from CCAC before continuing her business education at the University of Pittsburgh, Penn State University and Robert Morris University. At the CCAC Educational Foundation’s 2009 Legends in Leadership dinner, she was presented with the 2009 Legendary Alumni award. She is also an active member of the CCAC Educational Foundation Board.
