A pioneer in education and the law, the voice of the people in Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives and a humanitarian who fought to end discrimination while promoting the health and safety of the nation’s newborns, K. Leroy Irvis was an inspirational leader who helped transform the lives of the people of our great Commonwealth. His co-sponsorship of Act 484, also known as the Pennsylvania Community College Act of 1963, created the state’s community college system and ultimately led to the founding of CCAC three years later. It was due to his natural hunger for knowledge and enlightenment that this “lion of Pennsylvania” left with his passing a legacy of innovation through his words, his actions and the way he lived—a Renaissance man for the modern age.
In tribute to this remarkable individual, CCAC is honored to name the college’s newest educational facility the K. Leroy Irvis Science Center. Like the man himself, this building will serve as a place of discovery and intellectual curiosity, showcasing the latest scientific and technological advancements in green building design, educational equipment and learning initiatives.
Located on historic Ridge Avenue on the city’s North Shore, the 65,000-square foot K. Leroy Irvis Science Center, designed by Hayes Large Architects, was constructed using green building technology, earning the highly coveted LEED Silver Energy rating.
From the construction of the building to the internal green operating systems and state-of-the-art science equipment, the K. Leroy Irvis Science Center stands as a testament to the marvels and possibilities of science. The science and technology laboratories feature the most advanced technologies available, including cutting-edge teaching tools and equipment. They are fully equipped with e-learning capabilities, advanced lab apparatuses and instrumentation with interfaces for computer assistance in real-time data acquisition. On any given day, CCAC students and instructors will be busy delving into the mysteries of the natural world using sophisticated spectrophotometers, spectroscopes, polarimeters, osmometers, incubators, centrifuges, sterilizers and microscopes in their search for knowledge.
Encompassing five floors, the building supports the following academic course work: Biotechnology, Biology, Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Geology, Astronomy and Physical Science. Students in these fields will work toward associate’s degrees or certificates—with a sizeable number majoring in physics, chemistry and the other sciences with goals of transferring to four-year universities to pursue bachelor’s and advanced degrees. At CCAC, the legacy of innovation continues.
