PITTSBURGH—In an effort to address the critical need for bone marrow donors, the Community College of Allegheny County is partnering with Pittsburgh area chapters of historically Black Greek letter organizations and the National Marrow Donor Program’s “Be the Match” initiative to identify potential bone marrow donors in the region. Beginning Thursday, February 13 and running through the month, CCAC will co-host screening sessions at several of its campuses.

While donors of all ethnicities and ages are needed, there is an urgent need for African American donors and college students to step forward and register. According to Clyde Pickett, Special Assistant to the President for Diversity & Inclusion, CCAC’s bone marrow drive has special meaning for the CCAC community given the recent passing of CCAC Board Member Rex L. Crawley, PhD, who died from complications of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. “African Americans face a particularly challenging time finding a donor match,” he says. “Of the 10 million people on the national registry, only seven percent are of African American or Black heritage. Because patients are most likely to find a match with those who match their racial heritage, it is vital that we increase the donor registry in these populations.”

Coordinated through the college’s Office of Institutional Diversity & Inclusion in collaboration with the CCAC Honors program, CCAC will host drives at the following locations:
