- ACLU: American Civil Liberties Union
- The ACLU advocates freedom of speech, equal protection, fair treatment, and right to privacy. Their site provides comprehensive coverage of a variety of social issues including criminal justice, the death penalty, free speech, HIV/AIDS, immigrants' rights, lesbian & gay rights, racial equality, and much more.
- The Heritage Foundation
- This conservative think tank advocates limited government, individual freedoms, and traditional American values. Their "Research" area covers both foreign and domestic issues, including crime, education, family and marriage, social security, welfare, and much more.
- Homework Center - Social Issues
- Although geared toward middle and high school students, this site, sponsored by the Multnomah County Library in Portland, Oregon, provides links to useful resources on topical social issues such as abortion, affirmative action, animal rights, child labor, euthanasia, homosexuality, terrorism, violence in schools, and many others. For many topics, provides links to sites that support and oppose issues associated with the topic.
- Justice Information Center (NCJRS): Juvenile Justice
- Statistics and other federal information on gangs, missing and exploited children, and juvenile justice. Use the contents on the left side of the page to find material by topic. Articles are listed by release date and can be resorted by title. All reports are in PDF format. Many are also available in html and as text files.
- Kids Count Data Book Online
- Sponsored by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. The editors have developed indicators of child well-being which include such factors as birth weight, infant mortality, child death rate, teen births, children in poverty, etc. These are used to develop state profiles and rankings. Profiles are provided for the United States as a whole and for each state. Data is thoroughly documented in under “Definitions/Data Sources” in the first drop down menu. Go to the Annie E. - Social Issues and Social Welfare
- Social Issues and Social Welfare is just one of the many highlighted topics on the Internet Public Library's website. Just click on one of the sub-headings listed under this category and be linked to a number of websites geared towards your chosen topic.
- UNICEF Monitoring and Statistics
- UNICEF (United Nations Children's Emercency Relief Fund) provides global statistical data about children on such topics as nutrition, health, education, mortality and others. Select a country name on the main page to view data by country. To view data by topic select “tables combining statistics for all countries” in the introductory paragraph. Other UNICEF reports can be accessed from the UNICEF Publications page.
- Urban Institute
- This nonpartisan group focuses on issues that deal with cities and their residents. Topics covered include "Crime / Justice," "Economy / Taxes," "Health / Healthcare," "Housing," and "Welfare." Each issue has numerous full text research reports, which are browsable by author or topic, and keyword searchable; reports are available as a standard webpage or as PDF documents.
