Why Barbering?
The twirling red, white and blue barber pole located inside the Homewood-Brushton Center marks the site of the CCAC Barber School, where students get extensive hands-on practice in barbering. The space includes a classroom and a full-size barbershop that features 10 stations complete with all the tools of the trade. In addition to cutting hair, students learn how to color, straighten and style hair as well as learn basic cosmetology skills.
The 1,250-hour program equips both men and women with training in the skills necessary to become licensed through the Pennsylvania State Board of Barber Examiners. (Practicing cosmetologists are credited 555 hours toward barbering.) The program can be completed in just 10 months for full-time students and in 16 months for part-time students. Individuals who are interested in opening their own shop are encouraged to take the program in conjunction with the Entrepreneurship Certificate, and several students are taking advantage of that opportunity. By far the least expensive barber school in the region, CCAC's program is filling a real need in the community. Many students already have some barbering skills but need credentials to work in a shop.
Admission Information About Barbering Programs
The Barbering program at CCAC is a limited enrollment program. This means that you cannot enroll in Barbering courses without having formally applied and been accepted into a program. The program coordinator of the Barbering program, Professor Sheila Brown, can provide more information about the application and acceptance process into this program.
Barbering, Certificate (751)
This 1,275 hour program prepares and trains students in the theory and practice of professional barbering. Content includes didactic instruction and practical experience necessary to prepare students to sit for the Pennsylvania State Board of Barber Examiners licensing exam and for immediate employment in the barbering profession.
