CCAC recognized as a Vibrant Champion

PITTSBURGH—The Community College of Allegheny County has been named a 2020 Vibrant Champion by Vibrant Pittsburgh and the Allegheny Conference on Community Development. The two organizations collaborated to create the Vibrant Index Initiative, which drives diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I) changes across industry and sector. The Vibrant Index identifies areas of success as well as what critical actions are needed to improve the practices, policies and cultures of organizations in the Pittsburgh region. The Vibrant Index encourages companies to reflect on best practices while investigating opportunities to increase the impact of their DE&I efforts.

The 2021 Vibrant Index Summary Report names CCAC and three other organizations—PNC, UPMC and The Pittsburgh Promise—as Vibrant Champions for having achieved at or above the 95th percentile on the 2020 Diagnostic. Receiving the designation is a reflection on the college’s work-to-date in the area of DE&I. 

“Recognition as a Vibrant Champion is significant and meaningful for CCAC,” said Kimberly Manigault, vice president of Human Resources. “This distinction reflects the story we tell through our mission: to provide access to high quality education in a diverse, caring and innovative learning environment, upholding our core values of diversity, community, integrity and learning. Diversity standards are integrated into our hiring process, and diversity is a designated competency on our performance appraisals. The Vibrant Champion award affirms these actions.”

Manigault stated that CCAC’s employees are key to the college’s commitment to advance diversity. During the past year, in the wake of the pandemic and social unrest, the college launched a diversity, equity and inclusion certificate program that was well-received by employees. CCAC has also been recognized for the fourth consecutive year as a Most Promising Place to Work in Community Colleges by “Diverse: Issues In Higher Education” and the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD). 

“These distinctions affirm that CCAC is moving in the right direction. Yet, we’re not done,” Manigault said. “We recognize that we have more work to do and we are committed to working collaboratively within the community to attract, retain and develop diverse talent.” 

CCAC is also advancing these goals through the college’s adoption of the Five Commitments: A Commitment to Care; A Commitment to Serve the Whole Community with a Focus on Social Justice; A Commitment to Build a Culture of Equity on Campus; A Commitment to Identify and Dismantle Campus Structures that Breed Disparities and then Redesign the College for Equity; and A Commitment to Fund What Matters Most.
