CCAC’s Barber School at the Homewood-Brushton Center offering free haircuts

Growing program enrolling for the spring semester

Interested individuals can make an appointment in person or by calling 412.237.2591. The center is following all COVID–19 safety guidelines, including rigorous cleaning, social distancing and the wearing of face coverings.

By far the least expensive barber school in the region, CCAC’s program is filling a real need in the community. Students enrolled in the credit program are able to earn a Barber Certificate in just three semesters—10 months for full-time students and in 16 months for part-time students. (Practicing cosmetologists are credited 555 hours toward barbering.) Men and women get extensive hands-on practice in barbering as they prepare to take the Practical Skills and Theory examinations required by the Pennsylvania State Board of Barber Examiners for licensure as a barber. Individuals who are interested in opening their own shop are encouraged to take the program in conjunction with the Entrepreneurship Certificate.

Due to the pandemic, the program is currently being offered in a hybrid format with some of the assignments completed online, and the classes are staggered so fewer students are in the classroom at one time. However, interest in the program is still growing, and CCAC is planning to expand the school’s instructional space next year to accommodate the expected increase in enrollment.

The program is now taking applications for the spring semester. Students must be at least 16 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent. Interested students in need of a GED can get assistance at Literacy Pittsburgh. Individuals who would like more information or who would like to schedule an appointment should contact the Homewood-Brushton Center at 412.371.1600 or
