Now more than ever, parents and older adults are seeking programs to train for career changes in an evolving workforce. As the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported in a recent article, CCAC is meeting this growing need through its wide range of workforce training opportunities.

Post-Gazette staff reporter Tim Grant featured 40-year-old CCAC students Jessica Wheeler and Gina Wright as prime examples of a national trend. As he reports, a recent college survey by the Washington, D.C.-based College Savings Foundation indicates that parents across the U.S. "have a new vision of higher education for both their children and themselves that is more career-oriented, affordable and targeted."

The article includes insightful comments by Debra Roach, vice president for workforce development at CCAC, as well as Rick Susalla, director of CCAC's commercial driver program.

"Finally, parents recognize that a two-year degree or a workplace development credential is of great value because of the jobs that are open and the ability of those employers to pay family-sustaining wages," Ms. Roach said.

Indeed, Grant notes that the national survey's respondents "expressed a greater awareness and appreciation for what many consider the non-traditional education path - technical training and community college." A record-high 68% of parents "said they hold vocational and career/technical schools in the same esteem as they do public and private college."
